Admissions

Student Selection Process

Applicants must show a strong interest in their selected performing arts discipline. The student selection committee will review all applications SUBMITTED ON LINE.. Each program area will have its own interview/audition selection committee. Specific program criteria are listed in the “Audition Information” link.

Audition/selection committee members rate each application to determine the applicant’s potential for success in his/her program of interest.

Applicants meeting the selection criteria are placed in the qualified selection pool and are invited to audition. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

The following criteria have been established as guidelines for the selection process:

  1. Student applicants MUST be residents of Camden City, New Jersey.
  2. Students who are applying must not have accumulated more than seven (7) absences during the school year.
  3. Students must maintain a grade point average (G.P.A.) of at least 2.5 for all subjects. Students with G.P.A. below 2.5 will be required to give an explanation justifying their admittance to Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy.
  4. Students must submit a minimum of two recommendations as part of the application process: one from a teacher, and the second specifically from a teacher of your intended major area. (Ex. band teacher, dance teacher) Recommendations from family members are not accepted.
  5. Students MUST select Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy on the School Enrollment Form which includes student’s information, parental permission, audition profile, report cards, letters of recommendations and a short essay.
  6. Students must report for a personal interview, placement test and an audition for aptitude in Visual Art, Instrumental Music, Dance, Drama, Vocal Music, Fashion Design, Strings, or Creative Writing with school staff and/or professionals in the field.
  7. Parents and students must sign a contract acknowledging their understanding that if students do not maintain a G.P.A. of 2.5 or incur discipline infractions they will be transferred to the appropriate comprehensive high school.

6th AUDITION INFORMATION

  • INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

    The instrumental music applicants should come prepared to:

    1. Play a scale.
    2. Answer questions pertaining to basic music theory (time signatures, key signatures, clefs, rhythms, etc).
    3. Play a prepared melody
      • Your current school’s band director or private music teacher MUST provide one of your recommendations.
      • Instrumentalists are expected to bring their own instruments. The piano, tuba, percussion and amplifier will be made
        available.
  • VOCAL MUSIC

    1. The music applicants should prepare a song of their choice to be sung accapella.
    2. Each student must successfully pass a basic music theory test, oral theory & rhythm exercises.
    3. Each student must know the solfege syllables (Do Re Mi...).
      • Your current vocal teacher MUST provide one of your recommendations.

  • VISUAL ARTS

    1. Art applicants should bring samples of their artwork (a minimum of 6 pieces) varied in subject matter, in black and white and in color, to show the range of their ability.
    2. Craft projects, 3-Dimensionsal work or self-portraits, could also be presented.
    3. In a portfolio, each work must be identified with: the student’s name, age, school and media used. Also,labeled as being original or copied; completed in school or out of school; with or without supervision.
    4. Art applicants will be requested to produce three drawings at the time of the audition.
      • It is recommended that an art teacher provide one of your recommendations

  • DRAMA

    1. The audition is designed to measure the applicant’s commitment to drama and his or her potential talent.
    2. On the day of the presentation, drama applicants should wear comfortable clothing.
    3. They should come prepared to perform one monologue from memory.
    4. Applicants will also be asked to do an unprepared reading and participate in theater activities.

  • DANCE

    1. The audition is designed to measure the applicant’s aptitude for dance.
    2. On the day of the presentation dance applicants should bring appropriate dance attire with them, which includes leotards, stirrups (footless tights), Ballet skirt(optional) and ballet slippers.
    3. They will be taught a warm up exercise and a routine that the applicants will then perform in small groups.
    4. In addition, applicants will have to prepare a two-minute dance routine using their own music (tape or CD). The dance should reflect a specific technique, i.e. jazz, tap, ballet, African, etc. Hip-Hop is not recommended!
      • Your current dance instructor MUST provide one of your recommendations.

  • CREATIVE WRITING

    1. This audition is designed to measure the applicant’s aptitude for writing.
    2. Applicants must submit a portfolio that contains all of the following types of original writing (minimum of 5 pieces): Poetry, Essays & Short Stories.
    3. Work samples should be typed, neatly presented, and well organized. Submit copies only, no originals.
    4. Portfolios should be submitted with this application.
    5. Applicants will be required to develop a piece of writing within a 30-minute time period.

  • FASHION DESIGN

    1. Each applicant will be given a math and reading comprehension test, which will be a simple project with written directions. Students will sample tools and supplies.
    2. All applicants are asked to bring a portfolio with at least four of their original clothing designs. The (4) designs must include formalwear, school wear, outerwear and sportswear.
    3. Craft or sewing projects that the applicant has completed may also be shown.
    4. All projects and portfolios should be labeled with the applicant’s name, address, and school.
      • An art teacher could provide a letter of recommendation.

Students applying MUST APPLY THROUGH THE SCHOOL ENROLLMENT PROCESS. Students entering grades 6th, 9th and 10th ONLY can apply.
