Meet The Leadership Team
Dr. Crystal Breedlove, Lead Educator
Dr. Crystal V. Breedlove’s 27 years in education have been devoted to working with students and teachers in urban schools. Dr. Breedlove’s approach to schooling marries theory and practice with her implementation of researched-based methods that have been found to show improvement in schools she has served in Virginia, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. In her fifth year as a teacher in Atlanta, Georgia, she was presented with the Stellar Teacher Award, and she received a scholarship to pursue and complete a Masters in Urban Teacher Leadership at Georgia State University. As a doctoral student at Temple University, she wanted to examine how student disruption and punishment in schools impacted student performance, and she became passionate about unpacking the disproportionate rate of suspensions experienced by students in the inner city when compared to their suburban counterparts. In her studies, she learned that African American students constitute less than 20% of the student population serviced by public schools across the country, but experience nearly 40% of suspensions administered. This is the discipline gap. Dr. Breedlove’s work in this area was published by Temple University and is available online (Subjective Disciplinary Moments). In 2022, Teacher College Press published a shortened version of her dissertation work in a text entitled “Dignity-Affirming Education”. Dr. Breedlove’s overall guiding mission for children has always been to open students’ eyes to the transcending possibilities available to them through education, and she is excited to be a member of Camden City School District as she continues this work.
